Voter Guide

You’ve checked your voter registration status and made sure you’re registered to vote. Here’s what you need to know before heading to the polls.

Indiana’s Voter I.D. Requirements

Indiana law requires all in-person voters to share a form of valid I.D. before signing the poll book. To be valid, identification cards MUST be issued by the State of Indiana or the U.S. government and include the following:

Your photo
Your name, which must conform to your voter registration record
An expiration date that is current or expired AFTER the last general election

If you do not possess a valid form of I.D. for voting purposes, the Indiana BMV is required to provide a card for FREE… but only if you ask.

College students, please note: College identification cards are acceptable IF they are issued by a state school and meet the above requirements. I.D.s from a private school are not valid.

Voting Districts

District lines were redrawn across the state following the 2010 census. Always review legislative district maps, including precinct maps, prior to Election Day.

Vote-By-Mail

(aka “Absentee Ballots”)

Vote-by-mail ballot applications must be completed for every election; they are not kept on file.

College Students

You can claim the address you traveled from to attend school as your permanent address or you may claim your permanent residence will be in the community in which you are attending school.

For the purposing of registering to vote, you can only have one “permanent residence.” Whether or not you will claim your home or school address as your permanent address will depend on individual circumstances.

Returning Citizens

Individuals convicted of a felony are not permanently disenfranchised in the state of Indiana.

Therefore, a returning citizen from incarceration can vote. They can even vote if they are on parole, probation, or under home detention, just not in prison. However, returning citizens will likely need to re-register to vote.
